Summary

Complications escalate for the crew of a manned mission to Mars when they discover an unexpected passenger aboard in this watchable sci-fi thriller. Commander Toni Collette is on her way to the Red Planet alongside two scientists (Anna Kendrick and Daniel Dae Kim) who will perform key chemical and biological experiments to ready Mars for human habitation. But tough decisions arise after they find a trapped ground crew technician (Shamier Anderson) on their launch rocket. With the added problem of severe damage to their oxygen supply equipment, their two-year journey is put in serious jeopardy. Joe Penna's film takes a sober, science-based approach that proves absorbing up to a point, with the narrative pivoting around a telling moral dilemma. There are also strong performances from a careworn Collette and Kendrick in breezy prize-pupil mode. However, some of the plot points are naggingly contrived, while the action highlights at the sharp end of the story don't quite achieve Gravity levels of intensity. A solid time-passer nonetheless.
